Up To 15% Off: International Grenache Day Promos

Call it Grenache or Garnacha, but order this wine when you want big flavour with spicy red fruit flavours. In view of International Grenache Day, we're giving up to 15% discounts on over 35 bottles from producers like Domaine de Cebene, Sella & Mosca, Cervoles, and Celler Pinol.

Would it surprise you to know that Grenache is responsible for some of the most delicious and expensive wine in the world? Grenache is one of the most widely planted red wine grape varieties in the world, making it just as important as Cabernet Sauvignon. It ripens late, so it needs hot, dry conditions such as those found in Spain, where the grape most likely originated. Grenache can be quite deceptive to the uninitiated. Its lighter semi-translucent colour hides its higher alcohol content and medium-bodied taste. Grenache often has subtle aromas of orange rinds and grapefruit, with the unmistakable flavour of fruit roll-up candies and cinnamon.

Grenache-day

From exalted regions like Châteauneuf-du-Pape to the islands of Italy, we talk about some of the great Grenache wines out there:

Domaine de Cebene Les Bancels Faugeres Red 2015 (Special Price: $52)

The French have the most acres of Grenache in the world, numbering around 250,000. Domaine de Cebene, a highly-rated name within South of France winemaking circles, has a wonderful blend with 60% Syrah and 40% Grenache. The Les Bancèls, made in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, is harmonious and fresh, yet full and complex, with a persistence that ranks it among the best wines of Faugères. This wine pairs great with grilled red meats, game, and mushroom risotto.

Andre Brunel Chateauneuf Du Papes Les Cailloux Rouge 2017 (Special Price: $79)

Also from France is this beautiful cuvee, which gets its name from the countless round pebbles present in the vineyards as well being at the origin of the Domaine’s name. A blend of Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah, dominant aromas of red fruits are enhanced by a woody touch from the barrel contained Syrah grapes. A great taste of red fruits, leather and undergrowth. The tannins are harmonious and elegant, and a long finish in the mouth allows for even more complex aromas of undergrowth and leather.

Chateau Puech Haut Tete de Belier Red 2016 (Special Price: $72)

You might also be interested in this unique blend by Chateau Puech Haut. The Tete de Belier Red 2016 combines 70% Syrah and 20% Grenache with 8% Mourvedre and a splash of 2% Carignan. Robert Parker describes this wine as a "ripe, hedonistic effort that offers lots of minerality, darker fruits, pepper and underbush. It hits the palate with full-bodied richness, ripe tannins and a gorgeously pure, seamless texture."

Cérvoles Celler Cérvoles Estrats 2012 (Special Price: $108)

In terms of Grenache production, Spain follows closely behind France at 170,000 acres. The Coster del Segre region is marked by modernity and innovation applied to unique and viticulture.

This wine is cherry red with medium intensity and abundant, dense legs. Intense, pleasant aromas of over-ripened fruit with hints of wood, particularly smoked and balsamic notes. Aeration reveals predominantly mineral aromas, with hints of aromatic herbs, such as fennel, thyme and rock tea, as well as dried fruits and chocolate. Think sweet, unctuous mouthfeel, with balanced acidity followed by a long finish with notes of nougat and wild fruits.

Alvaro Palacios Finca Dofi 2017 (Special Price: $125)

If anyone embodies the promise and spirit of “The New Spain,” it is Alvaro Palacios. From Priorat, the single-vineyard 2017 Finca Dofí comes from ten hectares that were planted 20 years ago in the village of Gratallops. It's mostly Garnacha with 8% Cariñena and 1% white grapes that are fermented after being destemmed and lightly crushed in oak vats with indigenous yeasts.

This Dofí expresses the Mediterranean vintage from this vineyard, where the slate has a lot of iron that turns the soils red and makes round and velvety wines with flavours of red cherries, cherry pit, and nectarines. The palate has volume and is juicy, sensual and velvety, with some fine-grained tannins.

Sella & Mosca Cannonau di Sardegna DOC 2018 (Special Price: $34)

You don't want to miss this wine, which uses 100% Cannonau (the Sardinian name for Grenache). A varietal and a wine that symbolizes Sardinia, Cannonau is one of the crown jewels of Sella & Mosca.

This is a wine that expresses intensity and warmth, combining delicate floral and ripe fruit notes with the more classic ones of Mediterranean vegetation. The ruby red colour has an ample and complex bouquet, in which violet, rose, cherry and currant encounter elegant nuances of spice. In the mouth, the wine is full, robust, warm and generous yet well balanced, fresh and deep. The finish is persistent with a silky texture.
