About Winery

BELONDRADE vineyard is located in the town of La Seca, on the top of the Castillian plateau (750 MAMSL) and just a few kilometers from the Duero Rivers as it runs through Tordesillas. The climate is continental, with little precipitation (between 300 and 500 mm per year), and is characterized by long, cold winters and short, warm summers, with a wide temperature range between daytime and night-time. BELONDRADE has 40 hectares of vineyards of its own, divided into 23 plots of differing sizes. This mosaic of plots provides very different musts according to the type of soil in each plot, its orientation, age, its planting pattern or clones.

Jean Belondrade

In 1992 Didier Belondrade, who has always had a strong affinity for Spain visited Rueda and saw the potential to use Verdejo grape in creating a white wine in the Burgundian style exploring the possibilities of barrel fermentation and ageing. Rueda had already evolved from its traditional oxidized solera style wines to produce crisp dry whites with the arrival of Marqués de Riscal who later on incorporated oak in their wines.

Didier Belondrade produced his first vintage in 1994 from rented vines, using the corner of a friend’s winery to store his small quantity of barrels. From hereon in, he steadily built up his own estate by gradually purchasing existing as well as new plots and planting his own vines. In 2000 he constructed his own winery and honed and refined his innovative winemaking techniques with the help of Marta Baquerizo from 1999, to create one of Spain’s most complex and refined whites.

Gradually, BELONDRADE has achieved its objective of producing their wines exclusively with their own plots, obtaining in 2010 the organic certification. The Verdejo, tended and harvested meticulously in the 22 plots of the finca Quinta San Diego, is spontaneously fermented and then aged on its lees. Two different assemblages takes place along the year to express the diversity of the estate: BELONDRADE QUINTA APOLONIA and BELONDRADE Y LURTON. On a side, BELONDRADE also produces a single plot rosé named after Didier’s younger daughter: BELONDRADE QUINTA CLARISA.

In 2019, BELONDRADE celebrated its 25th anniversary.
