Hans Tschida - IWC's Sweet Winemaker of the Year 2019

The ‘Oscars of the Wine Industry’ - International Wine Challenge - took place in London recently where they honour the wines, winemakers, merchants and personalities who make this such a great industry. Now in its 36th year, the competition itself is accepted as the world’s most rigorous, impartial and influential wine contest, so the winners really do deserve the respect of everyone in the industry. But who are the winners this year?

Hans Tschida from Weingut Weingut Angerhof Tschida

was once again crowned the Sweet Winemaker of the Year 2019.

This is the sixth time that Hans Tschida has won the Sweet Winemaker of the Year award. In 2019, he was awarded 1 Trophy, 2 Golds, 4 Silvers and 2 Bronze medals.

Hans was reclaimed his crown after also being awarded in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015.

If you have never heard of the winery, it's probably because owner and passionate winemaker Hans Tschida shuns the limelight, and prefers to stay at home and tend to his 40 hectares of vineyards in the quaint winemaking town of Illmitz on the right bank of Neusiedlersee. It is a place that seems to have been created to produce great sweet wines, with foggy autumn mornings giving way to dry sunny afternoons, producing perfect conditions for the development of Botrytis. The range of wines begins with lightly Botrytised Spätlese to the rich and luscious delights of Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA).

The story of Tschida began in 1982, when they made their very first wine. At that time, winemaking was merely a hobby and passion. In 1993, they decided to dedicate ourselves wholly and completely to wine growing. Expansion began to a cultivation of 40 hectares of vineyards today, of which, 70% of which are planted with white grapes that are ultimately vinified almost entirely as sweet wines.

Quality is of the utmost importance at the Tschida winery. They create their sweet wines exclusively through controlled – slow and cool – fermentation in stainless steel tanks or in small oak barrels. Dry white wines in stainless steel tanks; the red wines in barriques. All treated with care. And time. Each grape variety, each vineyard and each vintage are different, and they require plenty of experience and intuition – that special feeling for wine.

We present some of his finest...
