This year marks the 11th International Champagne Day, and it initially started as a ‘virtual’ celebration whereby Champagne drinkers the world over would toast their love of everything Champagne by posting and sharing images. Now also referred to as World Champagne Day or simply Champagne Day, it’s no longer simply a ‘virtual’ celebration, with Champagne houses as well as bars, hotels and restaurants hosting Champagne Day events.
Founded in 1834, Champagne Boizel has cultivated excellence since its origins by respecting the values of authenticity and commitment to the best quality. In 180 years of existence, this family house has forged its reputation on the subtlety of its blends and the finesse of its different Champagnes. Then as now, each generation pursues the adventure by combining respect of tradition with a capacity for innovation to continue to produce Champagnes that are constantly more refined and more appealing. The involvement of the family in all stages of production, from the vine to the glass, and the family’s deep roots in Epernay, in the heart of Champagne, are two major strengths for the House.
Champagne Boizel Brut Reserve N.V (Now $76, U.P. $86)
This cuvee is obtained by a precise blend of the three Champagne grape varieties: Chardonnay (floral bouquet and pure elegance); Pinot Noir (finesse and structure); as well as Pinot Meunier (fine fruitiness and softness). The robe is brilliant straw gold. The effervescence shows great finesse with tiny bubbles in swirling columns. The expressive, fine and fresh nose open on white flowers aromas (hawthorn) followed by an elegant fruity ambience with notes of white peach, apricot, hints of citrus fruits and brioche. Its texture is seductive, fresh and round, well balanced. The first aromas are magnified, joined by intense notes of pear compote and acacia honey.
Champagne Boizel Blanc De Noirs N.V (now $89, U.P. $112)
This cuvée is exclusively elaborated from some of the best Pinot Noir Crus in the Champagne Region. It has an intense golden robe, the amber sparkles and the tiny, lively and delicate bubbles are enhanced by the brilliance. The bouquet fascinates by huge aromatic richness with intense and warm aromas of ripe fruits (pears, small red berries, apricots) and freshly-toasted brioche. On the palate, the freshness and ampleness are astonishing with a silky and refined texture. It reveals a subtle harmony between fruity, pastry and honeyed notes.
Champagne Chapuy is a family estate of 8 hectares of vineyards. The majority of them are planted in the “Côte des Blancs” region with Chardonnay grape variety, which produces a fine and light Blanc de Blancs Champagne, very typical of this region. Among them, 3 hectares belong to the famous “Grand Cru” village of Oger. Other family plots, located in the “Coteaux Sud d’Epernay” and planted with Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grape varieties (3 hectares), are used to produce the blended Champagnes, more fruity and mellow. The Chapuy family is inextricably linked with Oger’s history because one of its ancestors was mayor of the village just after the French Revolution.
Champagne Chapuy Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Brut Reserve N.V (Now $73, U.P. $83)
A bright gold with green tints appearance, a fine and persistent mousse. A delicate nose of white flowers, citrus and some hints of pineapple. Fresh and floral in the mouth, development lime and hawthorn aromas. A fresh wine, very typical taste of Chardonnay. This delicate blend of the best white wines from the “Cote des Blancs” offers high intensity of flavours thanks to the Chardonnay, featured by its floral, citrus, fine and light notes.
Champagne Chapuy Blanc De Blancs Cuvee Unique Oger 2014 (Now $199, U.P. $239)
Introducing a very exclusive premium cuvée from Champagne Chapuy, coming from a confidential Grand Cru plot in Oger. Only 1,440 of this bottle is produced. Deep yellow gold colour, with fine and dynamic effervescence.
The wine reveals complex aromas of ripe, almost jammy white fruits. The first impression is intense. The fruity notes of the nose are sublimated in the mouth. Creamy bubbles give the champagne a beautiful richness. The finish is long and marked by a very pleasant salinity and a great balance. A promising wine, with a finesse that will perfectly match a supreme of poultry with candied lemon, or a steamed white fish with a sabayon-style sauce with orange and mandarin.
Champagne Tarlant is a dynamic family house with a wide range of Champagnes. They have 14 hectares spread through 4 different crus: Oeuilly, Boursault, St-Agnan and Celles-les-Condés, all in the Marne Valley. Altogether this adds up to some 57 parcels, which are farmed sustainably. A real policy of vintages has been adopted and like the very best Champagne houses, the Tarlant only release their wines at their peak after eight to ten years cellaring. Benoit Tarlant has taken many of the Champagnes in the direction of using very low or no dosage, with the dosage levels now ranging from 0–6 g/litre.
Champagne Tarlant L’Aerienne Millesime 2004 (Now $139, U.P. $156)
The 2004 Millésime Prestige l’Aérienne is “the answer to 2003,” says Champagne Tarlant’s winemaker Benoît Tarlant. “Everything was relaxed. It was a nice and happy year, with good yields but no hail and no storms.” The white l’Aérienne blends 70% Chardonnay with 30% Pinot Noir and opens with a clear, concentrated bouquet of white and yellow-fleshed fruits along with citrus aromas and some ginger notes. On the palate, this is very generous and elegant yet pure and vital cuvée with a juicy Chardonnay character right now and lots of finesse. Still very young, the finish is pure, very salty, long and tensioned.
Champagne Tarlant Zero Brut Nature N.V (Now $85, U.P. $96)
Without added sugar, Zero (stands for zero dosage) is a frank fresh champagne that unveils all that the grapes and soil have to say. This Brut Nature is rare and remarkable in the balance of the three varieties benefiting from methods of cultivation which respect nature, and which are specially selected at perfect maturity. On the eye, it is golden with greenish hints and has a fine mousse. On the nose, it is frank, fine and fresh showing scents of wax, honey, lemon and mandarin. In the mouth, it is lively, long, and open with citrus freshness. A natural champagne, sentimental and open, ideal for those romantic moments. It will be particularly appreciated as an aperitif, and with sushi and oysters.
