About Winery

The Tschida winery is located in Illmitz, a world-renowned sweet wine town in the Seewinkel area of the Neusiedlersee in Burgenland, Austria. Hans Tschida specializes in the production of sweet wines and is counted amongst the best producers not only in Austria, but also internationally. Perfect harmony between fruit, alcohol, residual sugar and natural acidity is his highest aim – and even then, the variety must show distinction at the highest quality level. Each Tschida wine is truly individual, and it is clear to see why they are known as "liquid gold". A specialty of the winery is the production of Schilfwein, for which the grapes are dried on reed mats before pressing.

The region around the Neusiedlersee (Seewinkel, Illmitz) is one of the three great wine-growing areas (also Sauternes and Tokaj) where premium-quality Botrytis wines are able to be produced each year. The warmth of the Pannonian climate, as well as that of the vast, flat Neusiedlersee (Lake Neusiedl) and its numerous surrounding tiny lakes, create in the Fall the perfect conditions for the development of the renowned “noble rot” – the Botrytis – on the grapes. The sandy, light soils deliver the necessary minerality and are perfect for the Sämling, Chardonnay, Muskat Ottonel and Zweigelt grape varieties. And the cool nights here are responsible for the incomparable acidity structure, which provides optimal balance to the wines ́ residual sugar. The area around the Neusiedlersee, with its fauna and flora, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Reeds from the lake ́s shores are used for the production of Schilfwein.

Viscous, syrupy essences are not a matter of Hans Tschida, The secret is the variety with which the winery has developed an excellent reputation. Outstanding Spätlese and Auslese, the wines for 'Sweet beginners'.

Hans Tschida

Hans Tschida is a "stay at home" winemaker, who greatly enjoys tending to his 40 hectares of vineyards, 70% of which is dedicated to white grapes for sweet wines, in the quaint winemaking town of Illmitz on the right bank of Neusiedlersee. It is a place that seems to have been created to produce great sweet wines, with foggy autumn mornings giving way to dry sunny afternoons, producing perfect conditions for the development of noble rot (botrytis cinerea).

The winery believes in the philosophy that “Every grape variety, every situation, every vintage is different and requires a lot of experience and tact. All vintages enrich our cellar, our creativity and our becoming”. They produce a full range of wines, right up to the luscious delights of very sweet wines like the Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA), for which Hans Tschida is perhaps most famous.

Hans Tschida embraces and has risen to the “challenge” of producing sweet wines. At the 2013 International Wine Challenge (IWC) his hard work and commitment to absolute quality was fully recognised with 19 medals and 5 trophies including Dessert Wine of the Year and Sweet Winemaker of the Year. The IWC also named him “Sweet winemaker of the year” for the 6th time in 2019.
