What is Champagne?
The first thing you should know about Champagne is that the wine, by definition, must be made in the Champagne region of France with three main grape varieties, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. All Champagne is sparkling wine, but not all sparkling wine can be considered Champagne. Much like Prosecco or Cava, Champagne has significant levels of carbon dioxide, which is what makes it fizzy.
Champagne acquires its bubbles through a second fermentation process that takes place inside the bottle. This process is known as Méthod Champenoise (or the “traditional method” outside of Champagne), and is considered the premier way to make sparkling wine. By law, all Champagne must come from the Champagne region of northern France. There are different categories of Champagne such as Brut Rose Champagne, Brut Nature Champagne, Grand Cru Champagne, etc.
Why is Champagne Expensive?
There are a few reasons why Champagne wines carries a higher average retail price than any other style of sparkling wine. The first is the cost of grapes. The region’s high risk of frost and sometimes severe weather conditions can impact yields, which in turn influences grape prices. The grapes must also be hand-harvested as the use of machines is forbidden by law. This further impacts cost. In addition, the Méthod Champenoise secondary fermentation process requires hundreds of hours of manual labour, and years of aging before bottles can be released.
What about the other sparkling wines?
There are plenty of affordable and great quality sparkling wines to choose from, in a number of different styles. Prosecco from Italy is undoubtedly one of the most popular sparkling wine among connoisseurs and novice drinkers as its light-bodied fruity taste makes Prosecco an easy-to-drink choice and they are inexpensive compared to champagne. Cava (and Corpinnat) is Spain’s answer to traditional method sparkling wines, can be made with local varieties or with traditional Champagne grapes - Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. For occasions that call for a decidedly sweet, yet refreshing sparkling wine, Moscato d'Asti, a low alcohol, Moscato-based sparkling wine from northern Italy - fits the bill.
Buy The Best Champagne Online in Singapore
What are the best Champagne brands available in Singapore? What is considered good Champagne? True champagne aficionados know that the real stars are not the most famous houses, but the wine growers themselves. “Grower Champagne” generally refers to wines from the Champagne region of France that are made and bottled by the same person who grew the grapes. This is different from wines produced by the popular French Champagne houses which typically (but not always!) blend together grapes grown by dozens, or sometimes even hundreds, of individual grape growers from across the region. If you are up for easy to drink champagnes, the brut reserves are the way to go, if you are looking for something fruity, light and delicate, consider opting for rose champagne.
