The 2020 vintage was ideal. A mild and dry winter raised slight concerns for water reserves, but spring brought an abundance of rainfall and returned the groundwater to healthy levels. Summer was filled with warm days, and nights that cooled off dramatically – preserving acidity and aromatics. All in all, a great fruit set, along with no frost, hail, or extreme heat led to a beautifully balanced year resulting in moderate alcohol, bright fruit tones and elegant tannins. Harvest began with Merlot on September 14th and finished on top of the mountain with Sangiovese on October 15th.
This 2020 Chianti Classico showcases aromas of violets, roses, strawberries, and a hint of cypress. The immediate impact is bright and lively with an incredible flavor intensity. The flavors explode from a dark fruit center of blueberry and are framed by beautiful acids. The finish is dominated by citrus notes of blood orange, ending with lingering earthy cedar.
- Deep ruby
- aromas of black cherry, orange peel, and subtle notes of cedar.
- The entrance to the palate is bright and invigorating – as one would expect a Chianti Classico to be – then slowly softens; revealing flavors of red raspberries with the earthy signature of Sangiovese. The finish concludes with spice notes of white pepper with hints of mint and licorice.
Growing up in New York City, Lawrence Cronin was always aware of his Italian heritage. His mother’s family goes back hundreds of years in the small town of Castellammare del Golfo, a picturesque fishing village on the northwest coast of Sicily. Visits to the old country during his youth made the relocation relatively seamless years later when Lawrence moved to Tuscany to make wine at Arceno.
Lawrence began his professional winemaking career in 1995 at Edmeades Winery in the Anderson Valley region of California’s rugged Mendocino County. Prior to joining Tenuta di Arceno, Lawrence also worked at a number of other prominent wineries worldwide including Firriatto in Sicily, Cloudy Bay in New Zealand, Cape Mentelle in Australia and Calina in Chile.
Lawrence was hired as the winemaker for Tenuta di Arceno in 2002. With guidance from Vigneron Pierre Seillan, he has helped elevate this historic estate into the upper tier of Tuscan producers.
