About Winery

800 years ago, some of the first Maori people to arrive in New Zealand crashed through the waves of the Wairau Bar at the top of the country’s South Island from far-off lands – and made this special place their home. Hasley MacDonald traces his ancestry back and believes that the connection to land and sea, through the generations of whanau, would bring love, care and respect all to life in their wines.

The MacDonalds established the home vineyard in 2003 and released their debut 2011 Sauvignon Blanc to immediate success. It was named the top Sauvignon Blanc by Cuisine Magazine. The wine was also selected for the Top 100 at Sydney’s International Wine Competition. Since then, the te Pa brand has grown to represent incredible quality, fascinating and unique heritage, and a sense of authenticity, connection and provenance, all born from these ancient lands.

Today, with awarded winemaker Sam Bennett at the helm of the winemaking, te Pa’s family of brands now includes te Pa Reserve Collection, te Pa Signature Series, Pa Road, Koha, and Montford Estate. In 2019, Sam was named one of the Drinks Business 100 Master Winemakers for his role in developing and creating an exceptional portfolio of wines. Working closely with the viticultural team, Sam and Haysley are both intimately involved with the growing, harvesting, ageing, and crafting of the wines.

Haysley MacDonald

Born and bred on the Wairau Bar in sun-soaked Marlborough, Haysley knew the family land he grew up on offered infinite potential and that with time, grapes would flourish and produce exceptional new world wines. His vision was to produce a range of premium New Zealand wines that would connect the taste of te Pā with wine lovers all over the world.

Backed by a committed team and an award-winning winemaker in Sam Bennett, Haysley’s now spearheading the acquisition and growth phase for our award-winning wines. He’s proud te Pā’s growing global reach is linked back to the land his family has been deeply connected to for generations.
